I don't typically use my blog for "reporting" on things, but the occasion of an upcoming documentary film seemed worth it. During my teenage years (roughly the mid-'90s), I listened to a decent amount of Christian rock music. I was by no means immersed in that scene, but I had my tastes (including the correct opinion that Starflyer 59's Gold album was the best alternative record of that decade) and maintained a rough familiarity with any band that was marginally successful.
Fast-forward to 2012. I was two years along in what would end up being a 5-year inquiry into the Orthodox Church, and I came across a documentary podcast episode at Ancient Faith Radio about the impact Orthodoxy had been making at arguably the largest annual Christian rock festival of all time, Cornerstone. I was surprised to learn there were a few bands I was familiar with whose members had become Orthodox in the intervening years since I'd last listened to them. Among those bands was Luxury, a group with a dramatic story I was heretofore unacquainted with.
Fast-forward to 2018. Three of Luxury's members are now Orthodox priests. What's more, a feature length film will soon be released that documents the band's journey from the precipice of stardom in the 1990s, to a near death experience, to the conversion of three of their members to Orthodoxy, to their subsequent ordinations as priests, and finally to the band's resurrection and current recording project these thirty years later. You can listen to a recent Ancient Faith interview with the band here, and you can view the upcoming film's trailer below.
